The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, the judge said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
