From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Conservative responses to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole

Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the censorship process.

Questions Raised by Redactions

While the former president's name and image appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans immediately demanded greater openness.

“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.

A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure

But, some rightwing commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.

The release—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.

But a few are not, featuring prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the offensive.

“It’s quite ironic how the political left falsely accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement

Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.

Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Muted

Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was comparatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law mandating the files' publication.

The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy folders of materials that included little previously unseen data.
